Moments of Matter: A Ceramic Formation of Maternal Presence

Spring 2021

High Fire Porcelain, Gold Luster, monofilament, metal chain

This body of work called Moments of Matter consists of ceramic shapes and forms molded to support an intricate maternal relationship between two people.  The arrangement and placement of these handmade porcelaneous objects are symbolic of how the world may see these two individuals interact with one another.  Upon further investigation, a bond is discovered, revealing the maternal connection between a mother and her child.  The construction of the ceramic forms and careful central placement of objects are used to communicate without words, the fragile and petit glimpses on how mothers reminisce continually of particular autobiographical memories.  These forms are a vital element to capture the centrality of a mother’s body and how it allows a passage of nurturing humanity, especially during times of uncertain perception.

The formation and creation of this ceramic work is influenced by our societal views of feminism and how motherhood intersects these particular roles.  More importantly, the current global health crisis is affecting everyone.  Nonetheless, additional stress is placed on mothers to console, instill resiliency and provide a continuum of positive behaviors surrounding the future.
